I'm Andrew McMillan.

I look a little like this... or I did look like that, one day during the pandemic when I was writing an about page for something. The photo is heavily processed, and particularly oversharpened because I thought it looked good that way at the time (I still kind of like it). Photography is my hobby, so I do sometimes fiddle around with processing (or overprocessing!) the image from the camera to expose (heh) something additional.

If you feel you need the services of an old geek who's been programming for more than forty five years, but who doesn't feel that we should turn our back on AI then I am available - you could help fund my lifestyle that enables me to spend the rest of my time working on free software.

I spend quite a lot of my time working on things associated with the Debian project - I'm a member of the team called by the wonderfully committee-inspired moniker of "The DFSG, Licensing and New Packages Team" - we review packages that people would like to be added to Debian, hopefully finding them to be beautifully presented examples of software that is clearly and unambiguously free for anyone to use, for any endeavour. You can see the dashboard that I wrote for the team here.

Free Software things I've worked on:

Other things I've worked on:

  • Catalyst IT Ltd - I was one of five founders
  • Google - I worked at Google SRE in Ireland
  • Toast - I worked as a Senior Principal Engineer for four years
  • I used to be an Electronics Technician
  • At university I was a DJ on Student Radio
