The Horse Bridge

The Horse Bridge

October 30, 2016
A short walk from the town of Athy (pronounced "ath-eye", it seems) is the place where the Grand Canal meets the River Barrow. This Horse Bridge was built there, to get the tow horses across the Barrow to continue their hauling. You can just see the canal lock at the left of the picture.

There were lots of fisherman around here today too, although the local angling club had signs up saying it was a "catch and release" exercises, and indeed the anglers we did see did not seem to have anything to carry their catch home.

It seems that Ernest Shackleton was born in a quaker community near to Athy, so the local museum had lots of stuff about his polar expeditions, and this weekend they were running a series of lectures as part of an October Bank Holiday School that they run every year.
