Roaring Billy with Haast River and Pebble Stacks

As we crossed the Haast Pass it started to rain, which is pretty normal for this part of the world, but it mustn't have been raining for a while since there were so many of these small stacks that passersby had erected. As I took this photo the water was visibly rising, and in a few short hours this picture would just be water all the way to Roaring Billy in the distance. Shortly after that all of these small piles would have been gone.

While we were there we had to hail some tourists who'd wandered out onto the riverbed without realising how quickly the water can rise in these parts. They had to wade through a new channel to get back that simply hadn't been there when they'd wandered out ten minutes earlier!
