One tends to automatically assume that these carved figures outside the Te Rauparaha Arena are

Māori designs.  I must have walked past them three hundred times on my tri-weekly visits to the library with the kids. Apparently two of them were carved by a delegation of carvers from Canada, which is pretty obvious when you stop and look.
