The Great Hall

The Great Hall

August 9, 2015
Here is an interior shot of Donegal Castle (the older part) to keep +Kim Coleman happy - turns out I did have an OK one after all.  I generally find the interior shots a lot harder, because to do it properly you really need to lug a tripod around with you, and if I took that long for each picture the family would disown me! The keep was built in the 15th century, but of course much of this was reconstructed - wooden floors don't last six centuries after all - but the Office of Public Works did it in accord with the usual styles and techniques of the 15th and 17th century. The mantelpiece is pretty exceptional, and I'm guessing it dates from the 17th century, as does the fancy window, which would have been altogether silly when it was actively used as a fortress before then. My earlier photo of the exterior is here: https://plus.google.com/+andrewmcmillan/posts/RnfVsFruSn8 where you can see the window at the far end of this room is at the right hand side of that picture.
