Marin County Civic Center

Marin County Civic Center

July 20, 2015
After a frustrating hour waiting for +United to deliver my luggage to San Francisco on the plane after the one I was on, I decided to visit the Marin County Civic Center.  Quite a drive, but whenever I visit the Bay Area I seem to turn into this mad person who will drive for three hours just to see a pretty waterfall - nuts, I know. I've always been a great admirer of Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture but I think this is actually only the third of his buildings that I've managed to visit (the others were the delightful Xanadu Gallery just off Union Square in San Francisco itself, and the Guggenheim in New York). The Civic Center is mostly closed on Sunday so there are no interior shots here, and it's surprisingly hard to find a good vantage point to photograph it from.  Perhaps there are some drone flybys of it that do it justice.  I knew it was a big building, but even so, it's still impressive when you drive in and walk around a bit of it. In the end I couldn't decide which photo to post here, so I've decided to put the whole lot up at once. After all that tiredness and frustration of a travel day it was kind of peaceful to be walking around an empty campus like this one, but in the end it was also very hot, and I had another two hours drive to get to my hotel, so I didn't really stay very long.  Maybe I'll be able to get back mid-week sometime when I'm not working and get some interior shots.
