Walking the Walls of Derry
Today we visited Derry, from whence I'm told some subset of my ancestors came. A sad place, seemingly a repeated victim of misunderstandings, and of the powerful attempting to retain control long past the point of reasonableness and sanity.
It's the only city on Ireland which still retains it's walls intact and they are indeed impressive, and a fine stroll on a nice day. The photo is looking down along the top of wall from the Double Bastion to the trees which have been planted to honour the thirteen apprentices (and their lookout accomplice) who seized the keys and locked the gates, ultimately precipitating the siege of Derry.
