Manawatu Gorge

In 2012 we went on a train journey through the gorge, so in this picture we were shortly to pass down the right-hand side (if you look closely you can see the train has the green light). On the other side of the gorge is the road, which is fairly frequently blocked due to bits of hillside sliding down across the road on their way to the river. In fact in 2011 it was closed after several massive landslips and did not reopen until only a few months before this photo.

It can be quite inconvenient when the gorge is closed. Driving around over the hills to either side could take over an hour, and is not suitable for larger vehicles in any case, whereas when it is open it's usually only 15 minutes to get through.

I'd decided to post this photo a few days ago, and now I discover that the gorge was actually closed yesterday, in order to retrieve a truck that jumped the barrier - http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/81939311/Manawatu-Gorge-to-close-on-Monday-for-truck-retrieval
