Lyon
Trying to capture the whole city in one picture is impossible, but this one does manage to capture a reasonable range of the architecture!
In the foreground we have the "Amphitheatre of the Three Gauls" which was a famous roman amphitheatre with seats for 20,000! In those days Lyon (Lugdunum, as it were) had a population of around 35,000.
On the hill we have the Notre-Dame de Fourvière, completed in 1897, whereas visible lower down the hill, in the gap between the two nearest buildings, we can see the Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Lyon, begun in the 12th century and finished in 1472.
And all around, we see buildings in various styles from the 18th, 19th and 20th century. The older architechture tends to be smaller and to be located in the areas lower down from Fouviere and around the Cathedral St Jean, and so it's not really visible in this picture.
