Climate change has been particularly visible in the far north for a very long time now, but while it's been obvious to scientists that Antarctica is also warming, there's been an unevenness to it due to prevailing airflows. When this kind of draining of meltwater lakes started showing up in Greenland it had dramatic effects on glaciers, by effectively lubricating underneath them, moving ice to the sea much faster than historical rates. Continuing research is needed, and this is happening on the ice-shelf rather than on a glacier, but "ominous" does indeed seem the right word.
