Going Up

For me this kind of captures a significant part of the essence of Hong Kong in one photo. Tall is inevitably the thing you think of when you look around, but also narrow. With small alleys and so on. And then in between, things are green: it's a jungle, and not a concrete one either. And then, alongside, and around everywhere, are these older apartment buildings, kind of boring but functional, that have been around since before it was a financial centre. Places where actual normal people live. And altogether, it's design without design, just built this way. Just because.

Also, when I look at this picture, those apartments look surreal - like something a graphic designer maybe added into the landscape to show what it would look like. An artist's conception. In this case they're real, though perhaps new - maybe before the universal mould and lichen started to grow on them.
