Skerries

We nipped up to Skerries yesterday to see the Skerries Mills. Thankfully we were just in the nick of time to avoid seeing everything festooned with foil as they had apparently had a whole christmas grotto thing going on.

The old windmill is apparently 500-odd years old, and took about 15 men to rotate the top to point it into the wind.  The new one with five blades is really high tech, and could be rotated in minutes with the assistance of a horse.  Interesting stuff - I hadn't realised the technology had undergone such change, though I suppose I would have if I'd thought about it :-)

As a bonus the sun was just going down as we drove through Skeries itself afterwards and I managed to get some nice shots of the two martello towers and the boats high and dry in the harbour.
