Oak in Autumn

There must be few better places to go for a walk in Autumn than in the grounds of Birr Castle. Perhaps I'm just lucky, but for two years running I've managed to get to do this on days that are just the most amazing weather, with incredibly stunning autumn colours.

This was our last stop on the way back to Dublin from our week in West Cork, and after we'd managed to drag the kids away from the excellent technology museum, and had been to visit the Leviathan of Parsonstown (i.e. what was once the largest telescope in the world) I got my chance to stroll, camera-in-hand, through the grounds.

This oak really is huge, by the way - there's not much in the picture to scale it by, but I think you could probably build a five-bedroom treehouse in this one. Wouldn't that be fun!
