Water Towers
These towers are a feature of New York City, along with the pipes protruding at street level. They come about partly because of fires that were common in Manhattan's growth period when fire trucks could not carry sufficient water, or pump it at sufficient presssure, so a law was passed that all buildings must store a supply of water for fire fighting.
