I found out this morning that the Futuna Chapel is to be open 10am-2:00pm on the first Sunday of every month from today. So, tripod in hand, we sallied forth... much to the disgust of the boys, of course. "You mean we're going all the way to Karori just to look at a church?" said one.
Of course Futuna is not just a church. Really it is a work of art that happens to have been used for religious purposes. A delicate airy space, very modern (for a church - only 50 years old) designed by one architect and built by Marist brothers.
It is truly sad that when a developer bought the site some years ago he surrounded it with cookie-cutter housing, without even leaving a few metres, such that it is no longer even possible to walk around the outside.
Thankfully a charitable trust has taken over the building itself, and restored much of it. And this christian sculpture, which was found in a farm shed in Taranaki, has been restored to it's place.
