Elcho Castle
Two excellent castles today, which were chalk and cheese despite being built for similar purposes. The first one - Elcho Castle, shown - was something of a fortification, but never did get attacked and was really more of a "holiday home". Very well-preserved, with a few floors missing, but an apparently solid roof and lots of fun staircases in all directions.
Later in the afternoon we went to the "House of the Binns", which was a real hit with the kids. The guide was excellent, and we even got to meet Tam & Kathleen Dalyell who still live in the house. Tam seemed a pretty hale 82 (according to his wikipedia page) and there were some delightful cartoons in the house highlighting various points in his political career.
