Glengowla Mine

Yesterday we went underground into a cave and today we went underground again, in a very different landscape...  Glengowla Mine was active from 1850 to 1865 and extracted 300 tons of lead and 10000 ozs of silver in that time.

This was an excellent tour, including a small museum above, although the descent of 40m from the surface is easy enough, climbing back up those stairs could be challenging if you think walking to the top of an eight-storey building might not be your thing...

This is all marble (or harder) and so the miners had to blast their way down into it, but that makes it much easier for a tour, because there is really no need for the sort of structural support that you would see in a softer rock.
