Greencastle

Today we went around the Inishowen peninsula.  Well, in fact as we discovered: the Inishowen peninsula really needs more than a day to take a good look around.

For the kids the highlight was Fort Dunree, where many abandoned buildings are decaying, with ferns growing up through floorboards and other beauty typical of the decay of relatively recently abandoned buildings.  We skipped the museum with it's no doubt wonderful interactive exhibits and just wandered around.

The decaying castle at Greencastle (pictured) came a close second, and they enjoyed clambering over it (and under, and through).  A couple of the towers are climbable - if your parents aren't watching!  There are no signs anywhere indicating that you might fall, or that things might be slippery, etc, and the neighbourhood children must adore having this playground beside them.

It was a day of forts: after Greencastle we visited "An Grianan Aileach" - a dramatic circular stone fort, built around 2000 years ago.  A challenging one to photograph though - it seems you need to do it from a kite to get it properly in perspective, like here:
