Where do the new posts go to hide, when I click on "there are 4 new posts"

Where do the new posts go to hide, when I click on "there are 4 new posts"?

They always seem to hide way down in my stream, while leaving much older posts at the top. E.g. I just clicked on it now and the top four new posts are respectively 8h, 9h, 9h and 7h old - by no means "new", and I'm pretty sure I've seen them before I clicked on it (or maybe when I was browsing on my phone earlier). Below those four I can see the tops of three that are 32m, 31m and 19m old, but I've already read those three as well, and scrolling down further I find it hard to find actual newer posts.

When I click on that "new posts" button I expect the existing content to scroll down, and the new content to slot in above it, but what actually happens seems to be more like a random shuffle and it's very frustrating for my OCD, to the extent that it's turning me off G+ entirely because it seems that all I can easily find are things I've already read, and I have to hunt for the seemingly randomly inserted new stuff.
