Karori Reservoir
Once upon a time this was the water supply for Wellington. In fact this was the water supply for Wellington for quite a long period of time (almost 120 years), and in the centre of the picture, in the far distance (if you zoom in) you can see the dam for the upper reservoir.
Back in the 1990's the reservoirs were superseded, and the 225 hectares (560 acres) area around them which had been a protected catchment, was re-designated as a nature sanctuary with a rodent-proof fence constructed to surround it.
Twenty years on, the native forest is taking over, the birdlife is taking off, and the area is a delight to birds and tourists alike. We noticed the effect of this sanctuary increasing birdlife, even 25km north of here.
