Corcóg

On saturday we went into Galway city for the morning and walked around, but to be honest it didn't seem that interesting so after lunch we drove up to Oughterard to look at a castle (and a mine) and then I suggested that we should drive around Lough Corrib to get back to Galway.

Good call!  By this time the weather was perfect, with those fluffy little clouds floating around avoiding the sun but providing some variegation in the sky.  The problem with roads in Europe though is that there are very few places to pull over when you see dramatic scenery.  Or there are power lines in front of it.  I drove for about ten minutes looking at these hills across these little lakes, but every time I looked there was a power line, or nowhere to park.

Eventually there was a space to pull over that was barely longer than the car, and I climbed over a fence to get this shot across a small lake.  Totally worth it though, and I think I played the "stopping for a photo emergency" card more times on saturday afternoon than I have in a long time.

Someone with a better map than Google can probably tell me which of the "Twelve Pins" this is too, and then I can upload a copy to wikimedia commons who also don't seem to have great pictures of the individual "pins".

So it seems it is not one of the "Twelve Pins" at all, but is Corcóg, a 609m peak.  More information at:

thanks to Sean Conroy for pointing that out.
